LIGHTS OUT

I started making these paintings after my son was born. Wide awake during deep nighttime and early morning hours, I often ended up just staring out my kitchen window. Looking for other signs of life, I was mesmerized by the subtle night colors and how they transformed the scene as the light changed. The view was mostly rooftops, slivers of nearby buildings and a narrow patch of sky. Sometimes the top floor of a building in the distance would have a light on in one of its windows.

Around this same time, a few people who were important to me passed away. I imagined them turning out their lights for the last time. For me this work is a formal exploration of color and composition as well as a personal meditation on isolation and loss.
